Cognitive Science is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary field of study that deals with the study of cognition and mental phenomena. It combines approaches from philosophy, psychology, linguistics, neuroscience and computer science to more fully understand cognition. A particular goal of the Graduate Program (G.P.S.) in Cognitive Science is to integrate computational approaches to cognition with research and general reflection on cognition.
The emphasis is on investigating the mechanisms that support mental processes, especially those related to perception and learning. The collaboration between computer science, neuroscience, and the humanities and social sciences has proven to be particularly important for the education of young scientists who are familiar with the methods for the formation and testing of empirical theories as well as with computational simulation techniques.
